Participate! Low-cost Multispectral Imaging for Art and Archaeology

“Multispectral Imaging for Art and Archaeology” is the first crowd funded project related to Art Conservation Science.  It was launched by CHSOS (Cultural Heritage Science Open Source), chsopensource.org, and it will last 2 month.

For the first time, research funding will come from the final users of this new tool for scientific examination of works of art. Art conservation professionals of any nationality are invited to participate and add multispectral imaging to their skills and services.

We are counting on all the professionals that have been following the CHSOS website and have regarded it as a free source of valuable information for their work. Multispectral imaging systems are not invasive and are successfully used in art examination to map and identify artists’ materials (pigments and binders) and to enhance the reading of old documents.We propose to spread the use of this technology by developing a low-cost multispectral imaging system. If funded this project will benefit a transnational community of professionals involved in art conservation.

eCult 3rd Dialogue Day, Dubrovnik, Croatia (25 September 2014)

On the occasion of The Best in Heritage event, the eCult Observatory organises its third Dialogue Day on 25 September 2014 in Dubrovnik. The aim of the eCult Dialogue Days is to foster the communication between technology providers and cultural heritage institutions, like museums.

The first Dialogue Day, held at the same occasion, was a success and Professor Tomislav Šola, creator and director of The Best in Heritage, expressed his wish to make it a permanent feature of his event. This time, three eCultValue experts will participate alongside several eCult Ambassadors…

Towards an integrated approach to cultural heritage for Europe

The European Commission published a Communication: “Towards an integrated approach to cultural heritage for Europe“. It points out the challenges that cultural heritage is currently facing, but also the opportunities it represents at economic, social and cultural level. “The heritage sector must also adapt management and business models and develop new professional skills […] Digitisation and online accessibility enable unprecedented forms of engagement and open up new revenue streams” are just two of key statements in the document. Complementing the Communication, the EC issued “Mapping report – Cultural heritage in EU policies”.

On the occasion of the Best in Heritage event, eCultValue organises its third Dialogue Day on 25 September 2014 in Dubrovnik. The first Dialogue Day, held at the same occasion, was a success and Tomislav Šola, creator and director of Best in Heritage, expressed its wish to make it a permanent feature of his event. The aim of these Dialogue Days is to foster the communication between technology providers (from EU projects) and cultural heritage instituions, like museums. Open Call for Living Labs: Technologies for Cultural Heritage

The eCultValue project has launched an Open Call that is an extraordinary opportunity for Living Labs to run experiments for the concept validation at European museums of technologies for cultural heritage. (…)

The Open Call deadline is 10 September 2014, workshops and museum activities will be performed in October-November 2014 and the first dissemination activities (with the joint participation of the Living Lab winners and of FP7 CH technology project representatives) will take place in December 2014 in Rome and Athens.

Each of the two selected Living Labs will receive up to €5,000 in co-funding.

Hidden stories of the First World War

Amidst all the information about strategy, subterfuge and propaganda during World War One, it is easy to lose sight of the reality of people who lived through it. Jackie Storer’s excellent new book ‘Hidden Stories of the First World War’ relates 32 stories from the war, most of them newly revealed through family letters, documents and personal interviews with descendants that were shared during the Europeana 1914-1918 Collection Days.
